Duane Carter Cultural Foundation

Eighteen years ago, Duane Carter, one of La Antigua’s major promoters of culture, died in a car accident. His love of reading had led him to build one of the most important private libraries in town. To continue his spirit and promote education and reading in the region, a group of friends created the Fundación Cultural Duane Carter (FCDC).

In 1996, the Bank of Guatemala library on the square at Central Park in La Antigua had to close. FCDC took over its administration, and added its own collection to that of the Bank. Today, its users refer to it simply as La Biblioteca.

La Biblioteca provides a free place where readers and students from various national and international educational institutes can enjoy its collection of more than 8,000 books. La Biblioteca has Internet research services available for students and also organizes workshops and trainings for other librarians and teachers.
