A Day at Florencia

To get to Florencia Ecological Park – better known simply as “Florencia” – from La Antigua, just take the road leading to Guatemala City, and after driving about 9 km (about 5 miles), on the right-hand side you’ll find this protected natural reserve in the municipio of Santa Lucía Milpas Altas.

This park has 64 hectares (about 158 acres) of land, and of these, 8 hectares (20 acres) are designed to provide visitors with everything necessary to enjoy their stay, including playgrounds, swimming pools – with nearby changing rooms – as well as football/soccer fields and courts for basketball and volleyball.

If you’re looking to spend more time in a natural area like this one, you can camp – at an extra cost of Q30 per person per day – in any of the provided areas. Once there, after you’ve set up your tent, you can enjoy a walk through this magical place full of beautiful trails where Mother Nature will surely surprise you. The views of the volcanoes are amazing, and at night (if the sky is clear), you can see the Milky Way, thanks to the minimal levels of light pollution at the site. The sunrise you might see is something you won’t forget in a very long time.

If you take along your bicycle, you can take a ride on any of the biking circuits, or if you prefer to walk, remember to take comfortable shoes with you so that you can discover all that the park has to offer. On weekends, with some luck and while walking around, you might pass by one of the neighboring houses where fruit is being sold at a great price.
Although there’s nowhere to buy food inside the park, you are allowed to bring food in with you, and there are public barbecue grills where you can cook, so don’t forget to bring charcoal and matches. The park also has a nursing service to provide first aid. In addition, near each of the playgrounds or recreation areas throughout the park, toilets are available, and there are trash bins, as well.

For those interested in special activities that require a meeting space in addition to enjoying all the benefits of the park, there are ranchos (open-sided, covered buildings) for up to 250 people that can be rented. Likewise, chairs and tables can also be rented, if needed.

Florencia Ecological Park lets you get in touch with nature and enjoy some quality time with family or friends. It should also be mentioned that, for those who like photography, the park will not only meet your expectations, but will also probably exceed them.
